Bioinformatics deals with the various aspects related to the biological data covering development of data analysis tools, modelling of biological macromolecules and their complexes, metabolic pathways, designing of new molecules such as drugs, peptides, vaccines, proteins etc.
India was one of the first developing countries that had taken a giant step in 1986 and established a Nationwide Bioinformation System of India. This comprises a distributed database and network system namely Biotechnology Information System Network (BTISnet)
with 6 Centres of Excellence (COE), 10 Distributed Information
Centres (DIC), 47 Distributed Information Sub-Centres (DISC), and
61 Bioinformatics Infrastructure Facilities (BIF) in India to
promote research in Biotechnology and Bioinformatics.
