DEPARTMENT OF BIOCHEMISTRY & JAMNALAL BAJAJ TROPICAL DISEASE RESEARCH CENTRE (JBTDRC)

The Department of Biochemistry whose sole piece of equipment was a small colorimeter way back in 1969 was nurtured over the past four decades by its dedicated team of staff and postgraduate students to its present level of sophistication. Apart from its involvement in training undergraduates, postgraduates (MD Biochemistry) and PhD students, it runs regular short term courses on ‘Immunological and molecular diagnostics for infectious diseases’ with the support from DBT. The thrust in research is on applied aspects of tropical diseases; filariasis and tuberculosis. Another focus area of research is Cancer Informatics.

Apart from its involvement in training undergraduates, postgraduates (MD Biochemistry) and PhD students, it runs regular short term courses on ‘Immunological and molecular diagnostics for infectious diseases’ with the support from DBT. The thrust in research is on applied aspects of tropical diseases; filariasis and tuberculosis. Another focus area of research is HPV. The work spans developing immunodiagnostic, vaccine and therapeutic leads and exploring therapeutic potential of filarial immunomodulators in autoimmune diseases. The Department is home to the National Repository for Filarial Parasites & Reagents, a facility supported by the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science & Technology, Govt of India.

Jamnalal Bajaj Tropical Disease Research Centre is the result of sustained health problem based research activity by the Biochemistry Department for more than two decades at MGIMS, with support from ICMR, CSIR, DST, WHO / TDR, Indo US STI, DBT & KHS. JBTDRC was established in 1994 to expand the Institute’s ongoing Research Programmes in Tropical Diseases such as filariasis and tuberculosis prevalent in this region.

Research Activities

Mycobacterial infection (Tuberculosis):

  • Immunodiagnosis and drug target research
  • In silico identification of molecular markers of drug resistance in tuberculosis
  • Chemokines & Cytokines in  tuberculosis
  • Biomarkers for detection of tuberculosis

 Parasitic infection (Helminths):

  • Evaluation of in vivo activity of promising macrofilaricidal lead molecules
  • Study of interaction between platelet and human lymphatic filarial parasite with focus on eicosanoid metabolism and its pathophysiological implication
  • Mechanisms of immunomodulation by helminths and their applications in autoimmunity
  • Immunoscreening and surveillance of filarial endemic areas and development & validation of diagnostic, monitoring and prophylactic tools

Viral infection (HPV) and Cancer:

  • Unraveling the molecular complexities of HPV and apoptosis
  • Screening of novel pathogenic genetic variants in BRCA1 gene in central India
  • Analysis of ADA & its isoenzymes (ADA1 & ADA2) and 5’ Nucleotidase in CA breast
  • Urinary proteomics and metabolomics in bladder cancer

Computational Biology (Bioinformatics)

  • Structural & functional characterization of HPV strains to study host- pathogen interaction and identification of their potential inhibitors
  • Pathogenicity of mutation reported in breast cancer associated BRCA1 / BRCA2 genes
  • Proteomic variations among different strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis to understand drug resistance & virulence.
  • Effect of TB inhibitors in understanding mechanism of action of anti-TB drugs and in-silico and in-vitro screening of anti-TB plant and synthetic compounds against MTB drug targets
