Asthma
Asthma is a chronic disease that affects the airways, or the passages carrying air in and out of the lungs. Symptoms include wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and trouble breathing. It is a very common disease, often associated with allergies or eczema, and can run in families. Many environmental risk factors have been associated with asthma development and morbidity in children. Poor air quality, from traffic pollution or high ozone levels, has been repeatedly associated with increased asthma morbidity and has a suggested association with asthma development. Asthma can cause chronic, minor troubles with breathing, or can flare up into asthma "attacks," which can be life-threatening. Asthma cannot be cured, but most people with asthma can control their symptoms and live active lives.
